Thank you both. I did have a nice day. If you haven't seen 'Sideways,' I recommend it. I actually didn't see the latest '24' yet, but I have no worries about Jack Bauer. He's been dead with a collapsed lung once before, and he was up and running again within the hour. Death can't stop Jack Bauer. He's tougher than Superman, more clever than MacGyver, more suave than Bond, and badder than Shaft.

Hey hey!

Happy birthday frightwig!

Incidentally, I am 2 "hours" away from finishing the first season of "24" so, without spoiling anything from that point on (they are about to trade Jack for Alexis Drazen and just realized Kim is a hostage too) -- can we talk about this "24" thing?

First of all, I remember FOX promo-ing the hell out of it during the postseason one year (2001 maybe?) and I watched the first 7 or 8 episodes before I missed one, and refused to watch it until I got caught up. Of course, it is years later, I'm married, and we're both hooked. It's like TV heroin. I even got my dad and his wife hooked on it -- loaned them 2 discs and they came back 2 days later for more.

Like the evolution of such drugs, I hear that the next season is even better than the first. Can anyone confirm or deny this? Can anyone recommend the least expensive means of obtaining said second season? Do I need to rent from NetFlix or something? I really need answers here.

Needless to say, I am completely blown away as to why this show was not (and is not) a national phenomenon. Is it possible that America is captivated with "Survivor: Topeka,""Law and Order: Traffic Cop," and "American Superstar: Best of What's Left" that "24" is not the best-rated show of all time? Why is this not watercooler talk? Why isn't this the cure for the Sopranos blues? Why does "Desparate Housewives" get 400 zillion viewers every week, while "24" goes relatively unknown (other than a small cult following" for FOUR seasons?!?! It is an outrage and I demand justice.

Maybe FOX blew the promotion, but I cannot imagine having to wait a whole week between episodes. I cannot imagine what the world would have been like on a week-to-week basis. I mean, when Jack put the flak jacket on Nina then shot her and left her "for dead"?? That moment when Tony looks at the tape and says "why would he give her a flak jacket?" Is there more riveting television? Characters appear and disappear so that you never know what is going to happen. That was part of the Sopranos charm (they took it a little too far when they stretched the concept into "nothing is happening", but that's another rant) and "24" masters it.

I can't even continue because my hands are starting to shake...

Oh yeah, happy birthday frightwig.

I think the first season still might be my favorite, but the next two serials were still the best shows on television.

In the second season, Jack had to find a nuclear bomb that was set to detonate in Los Angeles, while Kim was mixed up in a kidnapping and murder case. Last year there was a deadly virus planted in a Los Angeles hotel, with Michelle trapped inside. That 3rd season had a lot of plot turns that were pretty great; it even featured a bad guy who looked like a dead ringer for Edgar Martinez.

This year is OK, but it seems like every episode there's something that makes me go, "No way. That's just stupid." I mean, you always had to have a certain suspension of disbelief to enjoy the show, but this year they're really pushing it.

It also bothers me how everybody on the show is suddenly so quick to torture someone to get information. It doesn't even have to be a suspect; the Defense Secretary authorized torturing his own son just because they thought he may provide a lead for their investigation. He was just a possible witness, in other words. Jack sometimes used to push the limits of interrogation procedures, but this year they're all out of control. And notice how it hasn't helped them get any useful information out of anybody. Maybe that's a subtle point being made, but the casual acceptance of torture by the CTU & Defense characters this year still gnaws at me.

Anyway, I don't know where to find cheap DVDs of past seasons, but have you checked any TV download archives online?

No. I haven't found a legal pay-to-download site yet, nor have I the requisite equipment to then burn the DVD correctly. I will be forced to puchase retail or ebay it or rent the series a few times.

Why don't these networks have their own On Demand channels? Survivor, the OC, Desperate Houswives, 24 -- you're telling me that post-season (since advertising dollars would not be an issue) these wouldn't make great pay-per-view (or free-per-view) content?

I wonder how much the typical interested consumer would be willing to pay for such a service, and at what pricing point would the revenue match what the companies make by selling you the DVD sets instead.
