Bon Voyage, Resto

The Strib reports that Michael Restovich has been claimed off waivers by Tampa Bay.

I wish this were an April Fool's joke.

Michael Restovich had been rated amongst the Top 40 prospects in baseball according to Baseball America even as late as Spring 2003, and when called up to Minnesota that season I saw a young player, 24 years old, with a big frame and a good eye at the plate, willing to wait for pitches he could hit and use the opposite field as he learned his craft at the major league level. He looked coachable. He looked like a kid trying to break into the league the right way. Studied, patient, taking the game as it comes in graduated steps. He was the model of TK's kind of rookie, and he was even a local boy. After a month, he was hitting .310/.442/.476. Now dig that. Isn't that about the ideal of what a club hopes to see when calling up a prospect in midsummer?

Gardy couldn't get his gaze past those broad shoulders, and perhaps with visions of Tom Brunansky dancing in his head, he complained that his prospect wasn't bashing any balls over the baggy. The kid was too passive. He needed to be hacking. He was going to be sent back to AAA to think about things, and the next time the boss saw the kid he wanted to see him "lettin' it fly." So Resto went back to the minors, predictably screwed himself into the ground, and he's been buried in the organization ever since.

It's not a proud episode in recent Twins history, and the way club management handled Michael Restovich up to today is nothing but an object lesson in a waste of good resources, proof that even a good management staff can go wrong. Whether or not he goes on to put up big numbers for the Rays or some other team, the Twins blew what they had here. How a club can have a blue chip prospect with his makeup, who hits at every level and performs respectably well in his introductions to the big leagues, and yet let him walk away for nothing today after he's never even been given a real chance to win a job is simply incredible. How they let him walk while the club gives preference to Luis Rivas, Nick Punto, Juan Castro, or even Corky Miller... jesufu---ARE YOU FRICKING KIDDING ME?!???

G'AAAHHH!

Sigh.

Anyway.

Yesterday, while speculating which other clubs might have an opening for Resto, I wrote this about the Devil Rays:

Tampa Bay - The Rays signed Alex Sanchez to play CF while Rocco Baldelli is out recovering from knee surgery, which moves Carl Crawford back to LF with Aubrey Huff set in RF. Meanwhile, Danny Bautista's sudden retirement has left the club without any solid options coming off the bench to fill the corners, and manager Lou Piniella has been complaining about a lack of power on his team. Journeyman Chris Singleton is unlikely to satisfy that need. Maybe Restovich's potential will appeal to Sweet Lou.

The Rays literally had no outfield reserves on the active roster last night, and non-roster invitee Chris Singleton is really just another rangey/weak-bat CF like Alex Sanchez. Non-roster candidate and Royals castoff Dee Brown also has been trying out for the club but hit just .250 with a .408 slg in 18 games this month. Not really the bat off the bench to satisfy Lou, either. The only other alternatives were minor league prospects Jonny Gomes, Joey Gathright, and Delmon Young; all had been optioned to the minors on March 18. Former Twin Buck Buchanasanadanna had also been in Rays camp, briefly; he was assigned to the minors on March 9.

So Restovich really has no competition for a bench role with the Rays this season. He could spell either Carl Crawford or Aubrey Huff, both lefty bats, at the OF corners and be the primary righty pinch-hitter on the team. At some point he might even become the preferred DH ahead of Josh Phelps. If Huff is traded after the season to escape his $7.5m salary in 2006, Resto could be in position to compete for the regular RF job with Young (now in AA) and Gomes (in AAA) next spring, as well. It looks like a good opportunity for him to show what he can do, and I wish him the best. Frankly, I hope he makes the Twins deeply regret this move.

Bon voyage, big guy.

If Michael was that good, Terry Ryan would have found a way to keep him or he would have been in the team last year over Lew Ford.

Did Gardenhire screw Michael up couple of years ago like he did with Justin? I think so.

Rivas and Juan Castro are gurantee contract players. You can't release the both of them without swallowing their money. I still wondered why Castro was even signed in the first place.

There is no point crying over spill milk now. I wish Michael the best of luck with the Devil Rays. I am glad he is going to get to play.

Ford came up last year because Torii got hurt, and Lew could play CF. He stuck around because he had a torrid April and then Stewart's injury opened up even more playing time for him.

They could've made the decision to cut bait on Rivas last December. Didn't have to commit another dollar to him this year. Doing so would have opened up a number of possibilities. Making it easier to keep Restovich would have been just one. Frankly, if given the choice between giving Rivas yet another year or giving Restovich just one chance to stick as a platoon or reserve player, I wouldn't need two seconds to send Louiee packing.

Anyway, so how's the Heyman project going?

The St Pete Times says ...
"Restovich, 26, will join the Rays in Viera today but could have a short stay as he doesn't fill their need for a defensive-oriented centerfielder or a left-handed bat. The Rays might simply take a look and run him through waivers, hoping to get him to Triple A."

Obviously, you have over-rated the big lug.

At 4/01/2005 5:29 PM, Blogger frightwig said...

Obviously, I disagree with the St. Pete Times. Why do they need a defensive oriented CF as long as Sanchez and Singleton are in their camp? Why would they need him to be lefthanded since both their starting corner OF's are lefty bats, and both Sanchez and Singleton also bat lefty? NRI Dee Brown bats lefty, too.

They NEED an OF who bats righthanded. Not only do the Rays lack another player like Restovich, they don't even have any other reserve OF's on the active roster right now. Why wouldn't they keep him? Who is bumping him to AAA?

It’s 11:00 in the morning and your energy is waning. Minutes seem to tick by like hours and your mind feels foggy. You’ve still got six more hours to look alert and act productive and get over anxiety attack symptom, so how do you cope with the afternoon blahs? Follow these six tips!

1. If you have a job that involves sitting at a desk all day or staring at a computer screen, take five minutes to stand up or lean back, close your eyes and stretch, especially in your shoulder and leg areas. Being seated all the time can make your whole body feel stiff and sleepy. A good stretch session helps limber up your body and gets the blood flowing again.

2. Avoid the tempting lure of caffeine or sugar-laden foods such as coffee, tea or chocolate. Caffeine may perk up your energy levels temporarily, but it also has a bad habit of leaving you sluggish after the effect has worn off. Instead, choose whole grain foods, fruits and vegetables to give your body the fuel it really wants! Eating healthier will boost your mood, elevate your alertness, change anxiety attack symptom and make you feel better all day long.

3. Along with healthier foods, take a quick 10-15 minute walk during your lunch break. Just a few minutes will give you a burst of energy that refreshes you and makes you feel more alert – while burning off your lunch calories in the process!

4. Sometimes, afternoon slumps can be your body’s way of telling you that it needs something. You may be feeling tired if your blood sugar is low (which happens especially after the effect of those caffeine and high sugar foods has worn off!). Packing a low calorie snack like graham crackers, granola, fruit or vegetable slices can give your body a boost and keep you from feeling hungry in the late afternoon and caving in to the urge to devour the entire contents of the vending machine after work!

5. Drowsiness is often a sign that you’re not getting enough water. Drinking more water throughout the day not only helps keep you awake, but also keeps you from feeling those hunger pangs that inevitably creep up in mid-morning. Taking a large sports bottle that you can drink from throughout the day is a great way to get your recommended eight glasses a day as well!

6. If afternoon fatigue is a recurring problem, it may be a side effect of medications you are taking. Allergy pills are well known culprits, as are some blood pressure and anxiety/depression medicines. Don’t try to circumvent these effects with caffeine, otherwise you’ll overload your body with stimulants while it’s already trying to deal with drowsiness, and you’ll feel mentally and physically exhausted. Instead, try a short 15-20 minute catnap. You’ll be surprised how refresh you’ll feel when you wake up! (Don’t try this at work though – I know it’s tempting!)

If you follow these tips on a regular basis, you’ll not only make it through the afternoon blahs, but you’ll also feel better physically and mentally, sleep better at night, and wake up rejuvenated and re-energized the next morning. Make it a GREAT day! anxiety attack symptom

Essential oils, roots and herbs can be used in a variety of ways to promote healthy living and acute stress disorder. They are used to create natural remedies for treating ailments common to both people and animals, to add flavor to food, to make perfumes and to create environmentally friendly cleaning products.

You do not have to own a garden to tap into the benefits of plants, roots and herbs. A few herb pots located by a sunny window are enough to get you started. Then, all you need are some essential oils and you are ready to go.

For therapeutic purposes, only the purest oils will do. It is possible to be fooled into thinking that you are purchasing a pure oil. Often, a lesser quality blend of several oils is used to mimic the properties of the pure oil. Blended oils are acceptable for fragrance purposes such as for perfuming a room, but pure oils are a "must" for medicinal purposes.

A reasonable guide to the purity of an essential oil is its price. Pure essential oils are generally more expensive. Common oils such as lavender and geranium are much cheaper than frankincense and carnation oil. It is advisable to become familiar with essential oil prices and then rely on this knowledge when purchasing oils from unfamiliar sources. Keep in-mind that you will generally get what you pay for. A price list from a reputable dealer is a valuable resource when purchasing essentials oils.

Usually, pure essential oils cannot be applied directly to the skin and must be mixed in a base oil to reduce their strength. Base oils such as almond oil or wheatgerm oil are commonly used for this purpose. Base oils are generally derived from seeds, nuts or vegetables and allow you to create essential oil remedies that can be massaged into the skin.

So, what do you need to get started with essential oils and natural remedies?

Without a doubt, Lavender is one of the most useful and desirable oils. Not only does it work wonders on cuts, bruises and burns, it also aids sleep and helps with relaxation.

The Tea Tree and Eucalyptus oils are useful for treating a variety of respiratory ailments. These are excellent for the treatment of colds and coughs. They can be massaged into the chest or burned in an oil burner to help clear the airways and prevent congestion. Tea Tree oil is a natural antiseptic and can be dabbed on cuts, bites and stings. It is often used to treat spots and pimples and when diluted with water, acts as a mouth gargle (keep in-mind it should never be swallowed).

Another basic antiseptic is Geranium oil. With its distinctive perfume and pain relieving properties, it is a necessary inclusion when starting out.

Peppermint oil should also be purchased as it treats digestive complaints and may be used in preparations for freshening breath.

For fragrant perfumes and establishing ambience in a room, buy some Patchouli and Ylang-ylang oils. Often combined in scented candles and air fresheners, a few drops of each in an oil burner creates a wonderfully perfumed home. Orange oil mixed with Cinnamon oil is a lovely winter alternative that evokes seasonal, holiday smells. Besides their perfume qualities, all four of these oils have other properties. Patchouli treats eczema and dandruff. Ylang-ylang is reputed to relieve stress, palpitations and high blood pressure. Orange is used in natural remedies for depression and nervous tension and Cinnamon is excellent for warts and viral infections.

The herbs, Thyme and Rosemary can be grown in pots and used when needed. To create essential oils from herbs, stew some large amounts in pure water, collect the steam and cool it. The oil will rise to the top of the drained water and can be collected with an eyedropper. Alternatively, a "flower still" can be purchased to make the job easier. Thyme and Rosemary are both antiseptics and can be used in skin care preparations. They are also delicious when used in cooking.

Lemon oil and fresh lemons will purify water and, when mixed with honey, are effective remedies for colds and flu. Lemon and white vinegar are highly efficient cleaning agents that can be used for domestic cleaning tasks without damaging the environment. Use white vinegar as a natural disinfectant or mix it with water to clean windows and wooden floors. It is also handy to keep a bottle of white vinegar in your car if you swim in the ocean. It will bring instant relief from jellyfish stings.

Citronella oil is perfect in summer to keep the insects at bay. Another natural repellent is Garlic. Fleas will not bite a dog that has been eating garlic, so a few garlic capsules in the dog food are a cheap solution to your pet's flea problem. A soft collar soaked in Citronella will also do the job.

Garlic also helps to promote a healthy immune system when the weather turns cold and viruses begin to circulate. In fact, most of the oils and herbs listed above are effective in helping to prevent many common winter illnesses.

Whether you are looking for remedies or nature friendly products to use around the house, the oils and herbs suggested above should help get you started. You will be ready to make some healthy changes in your way of life!

Peace is a state of harmony, the absence of hostility. This term is applied to describe a cessation of violent international conflict; in this international context, peace is the opposite of war. Peace can also describe a relationship between any people characterized by respect, justice, and goodwill. sportsbook, More generally, life can pertain to an individual relative to his or her environment, as peaceful can describe calm, serenity, and silence. This latter understanding of peace can also pertain to an individual's sense of himself or herself, as to be "at peace" with one's self would indicate the same serenity, calm, and equilibrium within oneself. http://www.enterbet.com
