I haven't followed the Wolves closely, but it seems to me that they've run into some expected problems when supporting KG with an aging Casell/Sprewell and no quality Center. The formula clicked pretty well for one year, but it's now obviously not a solid foundation for a longterm plan. But even if Sam and Spree had come back with fresh fire, could the Wolves have won the championship this year?
I dunno. It's hard to win it all in the NBA without a dominant force, or at least a good player, in the post. (It's a real tribute to Michael Jordan and Phil Jackson's system that the Bulls could win 6 titles with Pippen as MJ's wingman and guys like Cartwright and Longley at Center.) Strange as it seems to say of someone who averages 22 points and more than 13 boards a game, but I don't think KG himself is a dominant force in the paint. He's athletic, wiry, and works hard, but in crunch time can you pound the ball inside to him and expect to get either a bucket & a foul or a pass kicked out to an open shooter after he's drawn 3 defenders? I don't think so.
The Wolves probably could use a fresh spark at the guard position again, but I think they need a respectable threat to play the post if they'll ever win a ring with KG. Somebody who will score a dozen, crashes the boards all night to free up KG to get out on the wing, and in crunch time can draw at least enough attention down low to free up KG or a shooter to slide into an open spot or passing lane.
Larry Bird had Parrish and McHale down low, opening the floor for him to be more creative in doing his thing. Who's doing the same for KG?
