Urgency, Focus, Leadership

This is a sequence of screen shots from the 1st inning of Wednesday night's game in Seattle, showing Jose Lopez "stealing 2nd base"...

Here you can see the ball arriving by looking above Juan Castro. Note that Lopez isn't even in the shot.

Lopez begins his slide, but the ball is nearly entering Castro's glove, on target. A perfect throw by Joe Mauer.

The ball is in Castro's glove. Lopez isn't even within 5 feet of the bag, yet. Easy out!

Somehow, the ball pops loose...

It deflects away, while Lopez still isn't within a yard of the bag...

And finally the ball skips away. Credit Jose Lopez with a stolen base!

Yeah, spit in the glove, buddy. That should take care of the problem.

I think he looks like he wants to be here....

And statistically, Castro comes through unscathed. And Mauer is dinged. Not that it really matters, but if that's not an E-6 I don't know what is.

So, Castro starts because he provides the vocal leadership in the infield that Bartlett does not, do I have that right? Last week, Twins lose in Oakland because Morneau and Castillo get tangled up on a pop-up. Doesn't a vocal leader of the infield call off one or the other to avoid the error?
Saturday night, ninth inning, Ramon Hernandex tags from first on a deep fly to CF. Hunter throws a dart to Punto at second that would have nailed Hernandez, except Punto starts to throw to first rather than put the tag on the runner going into second--not Punto's fault, his back is to the runner. Doesn't a vocal leader of the infield, who, because the throw goes directly to Punto at the bag, let Punto know that the Hernandez is running and is an easy out if only he turns and applies the tag?

Both good points.

If Bartlett is in AAA because he lacks a "vocal leadership" quality on the field, what are the consequences to Castro failing to let Punto know what was happening behind his back on that play Saturday?
